Data Migration Work Group
The ambition of DAMA NL is to share and strengthen knowledge. This can be done in various ways: by making DMBoK knowledge available, by publishing insights, but above all through collaboration. We give shape to that collaboration by founding and running work groups, led by enthusiastic people who care deeply about data. This is the page of the Data Migration Work Group.
Objective of the Data Migration Work Group
To create awareness of what data migration and data upgrades truly demand, and to bring proven practice from industry into the community so the gaps can be closed together. A practical guide for both data and business professionals, with insights into how migrations can be planned realistically, how knowledge and documentation can be preserved, and how data quality and mapping can be addressed before they become the reason a programme overruns.
The challenge
Migration takes many forms: ERP, CRM, WMS, programmes, database and platform upgrades, warehouse and lakehouse moves, and document migrations between file shares and tenants. Whatever the form, the same hard questions keep returning:
- Migrations and upgrades are consistently underestimated in budget, resources and effort. How do we make the true effort visible before the budget is set, instead of after it is overrun?
- Documentation goes missing exactly where it matters. Imagine a banking application going through a database upgrade with no record of its connection strings or dependencies. How do we preserve and recover the knowledge that upgrades depend on?
- Cross-platform moves such as Microsoft Dynamics to SAP S/4HANA are translations between two different worlds. Which methods, controls and mappings carry data across without losing quality or meaning?
Output
The work group has the ambition to develop information products that are relevant to fellow professionals in the field of data management.
